Beth Lowell Artist Statement As a pastel artist, I am drawn to the unique qualities of Prismacolor hard pastels on sanded paper. These materials allow me to create layers of depth and subtle texture, which are central to my practice. The ability to build up rich, complex surfaces with the gentle pressure of the pastel stick enables me to capture the nuances of light, shadow, and form. I use pastel pencils for precision and finer details, while soft pastels help me achieve the luminous highlights that bring my work to life. My art is deeply rooted in themes of introspection and solitude. Whether I am working with portraits, landscapes, or still life, I aim to evoke a quiet, reflective space that invites the viewer to pause and contemplate. Mays' Artist Statement In my work, I draw calm with chaos, inviting the viewer to recognize themselves in the swirl. Often, their response is instinctive: “That’s me!” They see the tangled, expressive hair as more than strands—thought in motion, the vibrant pulse of inner life. For me, it’s about stories, layered narratives where the figure connects us all. I’m drawn to reflections, to mirrored images that reveal a duality within us. My figures reflect an inner dialogue, an exploration of self-awareness, and the many facets of who we are. There’s a profound need to unravel these stories visually in my practice. Each piece is a narrative told through careful reflection and rendered with the depth of experience. Working in series—a method I’ve embraced since the 1990s—allows me to explore these themes fully. My current series, now six years in, captures figures caught between complexity and stillness in motion. This series uses children (my own as models) to tell the stories of women. There are five paintings per woman. However, the initial inspiration often becomes obscure, and the finished painting may seem far from my original intention. Over the last five years, I’ve watched the public view my work in person. I’ve seen their reactions; I’ve heard their conversations. I can say unequivocally that what one gains from my work reflects one's experiences. I can thoughtfully present an image, but the viewer drives the meaning. Graphite, my medium of choice, holds a particular allure for me. Its silver-gray tones are haunting and timeless, lending my work a mysterious depth. Recently, I’ve introduced gold into my palette. This shimmer, like graphite, carries a reflective quality, an elegance that pairs perfectly with grayscale. The combination feels timeless, capturing a glow that enriches each piece’s narrative and creating a visual language that resonates long after a single glance.
